Matt grew up in rural Prince Edward Island, Canada, and spent his youth playing various sports and working on the family farm. At 16, a small gym opened up in his home town of Kensington. There, Matt discovered the satisfaction of getting stronger and building muscle. Later, the gym became not just a place for building his physique, but rather the therapeutic escape from dealing with the sudden passing of his father.
At the age of 19, Matt caught the eye of provincial Track & Field coaches for multiple throwing events and sprints. Less than 2 years later, he found himself as a Canada Games gold medalist and provincial record holder in Hammer Throw. From here, he was recruited to join the Olympic Development Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.
Unfortunately, just two months after making the move, a freak accident occurred in which Matt was struck in the knee by a heavy throwing implement, causing irreversible damage. Upon his departure from his Olympic dreams, Matt returned to PEI and pursued a career in Personal Training, Athletic Development and Bodybuilding.
Over the last 10 years, Matt has worked with hundreds of clients, varying from individuals to small group training, group classes, professional and amateur sports teams.
From his years of experience and through working with such a wide array of clients, Matt has come to strongly believe in one main theory that surrounds every single program he creates: “The Principle of Individual Differences."

As a Mental Performance Consultant at The Sports Clinic (TSC), I find enabling clients to improve their athletic performance highly rewarding. Through various systems and strategies I have developed, I help both able-bodied athletes and those with disabilities to attain their objectives, whether they are competing at the intercollegiate, national, international or professional level.
I am an adjunct faculty member of psychology at York University, the University of Guelph-Humber and Sheridan College, as well as a clinician at TSC. I teach a number of psychology courses, including Sport & Exercise Psychology, Group Dynamics and Test & Measurement. My general research area pertains to group dynamics in sport (athlete leadership and team cohesion), as well as mental skills training technology and its impact on cognition. My research is funded through the University of Guelph-Humber’s research fund.
I have recently created a mental skills program called HeadSet, a mental toughness/strength program for athletes and coaches that is delivered completely online and uses algorithms to automatically develop a customized program for each athlete.
